DONKEY

On Sunday I woke up from an early afternoon nap with a seasonal itch to bake cookies.

Now, at any given moment I carry around in my brain a list of recently acquired, exciting ingredients I want to use, and in my half-slumber I started to review them. Jumping to the forefront were the broken walnuts I'd gotten for a good price at the organic store -- if you're going to chop them, why buy whole kernels? -- and a handsome bag of grated chocolate from Alain Ducasse's bean-to-bar manufacture*, which I'd been sneaking a spoonful of here and there while trying to think of a more respectable use for it.

Chocolate walnut cookies; that's what I was going to make.

I wanted a simple, one-bowl cookie base that would get me from start to finish in under an hour, and I wanted something reasonably nutritious so I could share with my toddler without triggering a surprise inspection from the bad parent police. The recipe for these walnut and date cookies, which I've been making regularly for the past three years, fit the bill perfectly.

Robertson twins close to NZ 5000m record Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

African-based twins Zane and Jake Robertson have both gone close to beating a five-year-old New Zealand athletics 5000m record at a race in Belgium.

Zane was more than 7sec quicker than his previous best, finishing ninth in 13min 13.83sec at the KBC-Nacht meet in Heusden.

Jake also ran the quickest race of his life, clocking 13min 15.54sec in 11th.

Both fell just short of the national record of 13min 10.19sec, set by Adrian Blincoe at the same meet in 2008.

The brothers are now ranked third and fourth on the all-time Kiwi list, behind Blincoe and Dick Quax but ahead of former greats Rod Dixon and John Walker.

The results have implications for the 23-year-olds' involvement at the world championships in Moscow next month.

Ethiopia-based Zane, who has already qualified in the 10,000m, produced an A-standard qualifying time.

Kenya-domiciled Jake's time was well under the B-standard mark but just outside the A-standard cutoff of 13min 15.00sec, leaving the national selectors with a difficult decision over whether to add him to a New Zealand squad of nine.

The brothers, who left Hamilton six years ago to start a new life in East Africa, rarely race against each other.

Meanwhile, shot put hopeful Tom Walsh's chances of qualifying for Moscow have slumped after he fell short of the B-qualifying standard at a meeting in Madrid.

His best throw of 18.53m was well short of his career-best 20.09m set in Switzerland two weeks ago. The B-standard for Moscow is 20.10m.

Broncos and Knights in NRL stalemate Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

Brisbane and Newcastle both left Hunter Stadium feeling like winners despite playing out an 18-all NRL draw on Friday night.

Knights captain Jarrod Mullen missed with four field goal attempts in 10 crazy minutes of extra time, while Broncos halves Peter Wallace and Ben Hunt were also denied in golden point as the match ended in a heartstopping stalemate.

The Knights looked dead and buried trailing 18-10 with eight minutes remaining before late tries to Beau Scott and Akuila Uate locked the game up.

But veteran hooker Craig Gower missed both conversion attempts, including a sideline shocker with the chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation time.

The draw, though, kept Newcastle clinging to eighth spot and left coach Wayne Bennett claiming a moral victory.

"As far as I'm concerned, in the position that we're in, it's as good as a win," Bennett said.

"I've got no mixed emotions about that. They did what you want your football team to do - not give up, keep at it."

Gower stepped up for Newcastle's final two conversion attempts after Bennett replaced first-choice goalkicker Tyrone Roberts midway through the second half.

"I've got no regrets about that," Bennett said.

"We had a game to win and you've got two interchange players and you've got to try and get in your head what's going to work for you.

"I could see them working their hearts out and I was just trying to help a little bit and get them to where they can.

"That's what you've got to do as a coach."

The Broncos' share of the points kept their finals hopes flickering.

But still languishing in 12th spot, four points adrift of the eighth-placed Knights, they will almost certainly need to win all five remaining games to squeeze into the playoffs.

In a bonus, four of those games will be in Brisbane.

"We're not doing too many sums at the moment. We're just trying to play some tough footy," said Broncos skipper Sam Thaiday.

"I think that's a bit of money in the bank there. We're going home now. I am looking forward to getting back on Suncorp Stadium and playing some good footy. We're coming.

Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin also saw the glass half-full, claiming a win and a draw from away games in Townsville and Newcastle were enough to give his side a platform to launch a late title push.

"I was very proud of their efforts," Griffin said.

"They showed a tremendous amount of character. That second half we couldn't get any ball or field position.

"It doesn't feel like a loss. There was a lot of positives to come out of it."

The draw also ended Bennett's sorry run of nine straight defeats against former sides he has coached since leaving the Broncos in 2008, first to join St George Illawarra and then the Knights last year.

The veteran coach just wishes he didn't have to sit through an extra excruciating 10 minutes.

"At the end of the night, we both walked away with one point each and the fans have got to go home with one point each and we all get on with life," he said.

"And for the life of me, I can't see why the game didn't stop at 80 minutes. I hope in the future we get to that point."

Pedro hits hat-trick as Barca trounce Rayo Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

Pedro Rodriguez scored a hat-trick as Barcelona maintained their 100 percent start to the La Liga season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

The Spanish international rewarded the visitors' bright start when he slotted from after some brilliant play by Lionel Messi on the half hour mark.

However, just as in recent weeks, Barca were thankful to goalkeeper Victor Valdes for keeping them in front as he saved his second penalty in as many games when he palmed away Roberto Trashorras' effort 10 minutes before half-time.

That was to be the turning point as Pedro added a second barely two minutes into the second-half before sealing his hat-trick 13 minutes from time.

Cesc Fabregas rounded off a fine evening for Gerardo Martino's men with a thumping finish two minutes later.

"We know that Vallecas is a difficult place to come. They have a competitive team, but we managed to find the spaces and score the goals," Pedro told Gol TV afterwards.

"I am happy with the overall work of the team. In the personal aspect, obviously I am happy too, but I need to give my thanks to my teammates," he added after receiving a trio of fine assists from Messi, Neymar and Fabregas.

Atletico Madrid also maintained their 100 percent record so far this season as second-half goals from Raul Garcia and Diego Costa handed them a well-deserved 2-0 win away to Valladolid.

Almeria kept up their record of having scored and conceded at least twice in every game since their return to the top-flight with a 2-2 draw at home to Levante.

And Real Sociedad's winless league streak extended to four games as they could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Malaga.
